This week, one of my favourite podcasts (This American Life) examined how Toyota showed GM how to make cars using TPS and the challenges in implementing the system.
One of the key lessons to be learned is that a system is not as simple as establishing a superficial set of rules. In order to be effective, a system needs to be deployed and acted on site wide from operators to management. There needs to be sufficient infrastructure to support roll out or else changes fall by the way side.
