Sex Ed Controversy: Why is this still a thing?
Eldon Kao
Just checking the news today and it looks like the new Ontario sex-ed curriculum (read in full here) is still feature material on The Toronto Star's website. Apparently, conservative parents think that vandalism is a good way to exhibit their moral superiority over this issue and their children have been regularly pulled out of class in protest of the new curriculum. Although I believe every parent is well intentioned, I think the actions of these parents border more on sheltering than protecting. Some of the rationale against the curriculum is so laughably twisted I can't believe anyone could say it with a straight face. I wanted to paraphrase one of the tweets that were read on air during a local news viewer debate that went something like this:
...cue laugh track and applause break...
Honestly, if anyone believes that statement with any amount of conviction then there's no rational debate that will sway their opinion. It doesn't help that when I did some googling on this topic, the first hit I got was to this Campaign Life Coalition article which labels the Sex Ed curriculum as "Radical" and is complete right-wing propaganda. The Campaign Life Coalition is of course a Christian conservative pro-life group that is also against homosexuality. I'm not going to refute any of the claims made on the website because they are all equally ridiculous. Instead I would just like to point out the following:
- Sex is not only taught in classrooms - When parents say that they should have the right and freedom to decide when their kids should learn about sex I wonder what percentage will actually engage with their kids or if by "when" they actually mean "never". It doesn't matter if you pull your kids out for that class because they don't exist in vacuum. Kids will talk and there's probably nothing more damaging than the crazy ideas that float around the schoolyard. No matter how diligent you are, there's no way you can censor everything in your child's life.
- Sex education is a public health matter not a private opinion - The curriculum is about education not teaching. I feel like this is akin to the anti-vaxxers campaign. The general public is looking to create a safe environment through herd immunity but there's a vocal minority that would rather shelter their kids and roll the dice on everyone's well being. Being ignorant or intolerant on these issues is not only detrimental to health concerns like teen-pregnancy/abortion rates and STIs but also the emotional/mental health of kids that are bullied for the wide array of things from online exposure to sexual orientation/identity. It's literally a life or death decision. Even if you don't want your kid to be gay or trans, would you want them to be the ones who push them to suicide?
There's really nothing original about my opinion so I'll stop here, it's just saddening that in 2015 there are people who are presumably close in age to me that hold these opinions.
